Cartography of Darkness is a transclusive research platform dedicated to exploring universalisms and the unity of knowledge in our highly obfuscated, crisis-ridden age. Beginning with our situated knowledge in Lebanon, the platform’s inaugural chapter “FOR A TRANS-ELECTRIC SOLIDARITY” seeks to publicly probe and critically map the obscure genealogies of Lebanon’s techno-political and ecological histories of dispossession, ecocide and agnotology while studying the unity of knowledge. The cognitive mapping platform is comprised of a sonified accretive map made of several layers of interactive strata and spatialized data, a public media repository that makes accessible for the first time research material found in personal archives created by scientists, artists and investigative journalists and the scraped web, new text and audio research published regularly as part of a seasonal periodical/research chapter that remains open for a period of nine months.

«خريطة الظّلام» هي منصّة بحثيّة تشاركيّة تستقصي مفاهيم العالميّة والاتحاد المعرفي من منطلق الزمكانيّة  الآنية، المتأزمة والمبهمة. تسعى المنصّة إلى تفحّص الأصول والتسلسلات المبهمة والملتبسة لتواريخ لبنان البيئية والتكنو–سياسية المتعلّقة بسياسات السلب والجرائم البيئيّة وآليات التَّجهيل. تتكون منصة رسم الخرائط المعرفية الجماعية هذه من ثلاثيّة حيزيّة تضمُّ خريطة ومستودع ومنشورٍ دوريّ. تتكون الخريطة التراكمية المُصَوتَنَة من عدة طبقات من المركّبات التفاعليّة والبيانات المكانية. للمرة الأولى، سوف يتيح المستودع العام للوسائط الإطلاع على مجموعةٍ من المواد المتوفّرة رقميّاً، والتي تضمُّ أرشيفات شخصيّة وضعها علماء وفنانون وممارسون قانونيون وصحفيون استقصائيون. هذا بالإضافة إلى المواد المترابطة والمنسوخة المتوفّرة على الإنترنت. أما المنشور الدوري فهو يضمُّ أبحاثاً مكتوبة وأخرى متعددة الوسائط، تقوم «آليات المجتمع» والمساهمون المدعوون بنشرها بشكلٍ منتظم  كجزءٍ من فصلٍ بحثيٍّ يتناول في كل مرّة قضيّةً محدّدة. من شأن هذه الفصول البحثية أن تضيف طبقات مستحدثة إلى الخريطة وموادٍ جديدة إلى مستودع البيانات والأبحاث.

Every periodical/research chapter seeks to expose the regimes of invisibility that contaminate and head Lebanon’s hegemonic modes of production, while fostering new ways to collaboratively see into, study and transform our environment. The contributions revolve around trans-electric and trans-regional solidarity, burgeoning social models based on mutual aid, public access and social justice as opposed to kleptocracy; and ecologies of care as opposed to the local and global economy of toxic discard and denial. By doing so, ‘Cartography of Darkness’ seeks to collectively search for ways to expose, link and see through the regimes of invisibility, the explosive environments and cultures of corruption that denigrate life from the people in Lebanon, while deeply influencing the links between the production of knowledge, the production of space and the articulation of politics.

يسعى كل فصل دوري/بحثي إلى الكشف عن الأنظمة المتوارية التي تسبّب التلوث وتتصدّر أنماط الإنتاج المهيمنة في لبنان، كما إلى تعزيز طرق جديدة لتدارس قضايا البيئة جماعياً وإلى تحليلها وإيجاد استراتيجيات تؤول إلى العناية بها. تتمحور هذه المساهمات حول أفعال التّضامن العابرة لأزمة الكهرباء وللاصطفائيات والمناطق، والتي تسعى إلى بلورة أشكال ونماذج اجتماعية قائمة على العدالة والمساعدة المتبادلة وإتاحة الحيّز العام، كممارسةٍ تتصدّى اللصوص وتواجههم. كما تهدف أيضاً إلى خلق أوساط رعايةٍ وعناية في مواجهة الاقتصاد المحلي والعالمي القائم على الإنكار وعلىى الرّمي والتكديس المُسِمّ والضّار. من خلال هذا كلّه، تسعى «خريطة الظّلام»، وبشكلٍ جماعيٍّ وتكاتفيّ، إلى إيجاد سُبُلٍ تفضح وتُعرّي وتُميط اللثام عن تلك الأنظمة المتوارية الموغِلة في ممارسات النَّهب والتَّخريب، وعن وسائط وثقافات الفساد المتفشية التي تسلب سُكّان لبنان هناء عيشهم وتؤثّر سلباً وبعمقٍ على الروابط الكامنة بين الإنتاج المعرفي والإنتاج المكاني والخطاب السياسي.

The entirety of the architecture and code of Cartography of Darkness is made publicly readable and available for re-use through a GNU V3 open-source license. All the material in the repository that the team has directly digitised and archived are available for use and re-use through a Creative Commons license. The three spaces that make up Cartography of Darkness; the Periodical, Repository and Map are interlinked in a transclusive approach to one another. ‘Transclusion’ was conceived and coined by philosopher, sociologist and computer architect Theodor Nelson in the 1960s. It describes media that are brought in from various sources to be ‘knowably in more than one place’. Nelson also coined the relevant terms ‘hypermedia’, ‘hypertext’, ‘xanalogical storage’ and ‘intertwingularity’ that we would argue are not based on the digital advent of computational media, but on trans-millennial theories of emanation found in the quiddity of the circulation of thoughts and media.

تترابط هذه المساحات الثلاث وتتتابع فيما بينها ضمن نَهجٍ تَضمينيٍّ يشمل في ما بينها ويصبُّ في مساحةٍ واحدة هي أشبه بمنتدى عام مفتوح المصدر. إبتكر مفهوم «التَّضمين» وصاغه الفيلسوف وعالم الاجتماع ومهندس الكمبيوتر ثيودور نيلسون في ستينيات القرن الماضي. يرمي مفهوم «التَّضمين» إلى أن تكون جميع البيانات والمعلومات المجمَّعة من مصادرٍ مختلفة ‘معروفة ومُتاحة في أكثر من مكانٍ واحد‘. في هذا السياق، يستحدثُ نيلسون أيضاً مصطلحات «هيپرميديا»، «هيپرتكست» (أي النَّص التَّشعُّبي)، و«التَّخزين الكزانالوجي» والـ «التداخل العلاقاتي». قد يسعنا القول أن هذه المصطلحات أو المفاهيم لا تستند في جوهرها إلى الظهور الرقمي للوسائط الحسابية والتجميعيّة، بل إلى النظريات عبر–الألفية المتعلّقة بمفهوم الانبثاق الكامن في جوهر عمليّة تداول الأفكار والوسائط. يتمثل أحد الأهداف الرئيسية لمنصة «خريطة الظّلام» في نَبش النفايات السامة المدفونة في المحاجر منذ ثلاثة عقود، والضّغط من أجل تشكيل لجنة تحقيق دولية مستقلة تقودها كوادرٌ محليّة من أجل المشاركة في التحقيق في تفجير مرفأ بيروت، والعمل على تفعيل سياسة التعويض والإصلاح وتحقيق الزّلسَمة (أي إزالة السّميّة) في لبنان والعالم.
